Matis was founded by François Carbone and Arnaud Dubois, who regarded the firm as a natural fit for combining their two areas of expertise in order to produce the highest standards in art investing.

François had founded and developed one of the leaders in crowdfunding in France over 10 years. He was in charge of teams dealing with investor relations, marketing, and technical aspects. He had significantly contributed to the creation of French regulations on crowdfunding, being a founder and president of the sector's association until the establishment of its regulatory framework in 2014.

After leaving his operational role in his previous company, he wanted to invest a portion of his personal wealth in art.

In 2012, Arnaud created Arnaud Dubois Associates, a firm specializing in the management of artistic heritage, focusing on international Contemporary Art. Over 10 years, he and his team assisted clients in over 700 transactions. In recent years, Arnaud and his team began advising clients who pooled their resources to access works by more iconic artists, which were priced higher. It was becoming clear that there was a desire among private investors to access major works, necessitating the right structure and access to such offerings.

Observing the options available to private investors, Arnaud and François realized that the field was almost untouched in Europe, whether one was advised by a private bank, a wealth management consultant, their own family office, or as a private investor seeking smart investments in art.

Several factors explain this:

  • Before 2022, Europe lacked a suitable regulatory framework that could institutionalize such a product while opening access to more moderate investments and club deals.

  • The investment team is a rare skill that must be exercised by experts proficient in purchasing, knowledgeable about the valuation of works, and having the right networks for resale ; different professions in the art market are at the edge of these skills but do not encompass all of them. Arnaud's team uniquely constituted the only art consultancy with a team specializing in various roles from purchasing to resale.

François and Arnaud then decided to create Matis, which brings together a team of experienced professionals to make art investment a staple in unlisted investments.
