HOW TO INVEST

Matis opens the doors of the art market for you

Our team of professionals makes it possible for you to invest in contemporary art and open up a world of opportunities without constraints.

Enjoy the thrill of investing,
while we handle the details

Our observation

The direct acquisition of contemporary masterpieces requires expertise and networks in a market where information is asymmetric.

Not only does it involve mobilizing a significant amount of cash, often hundreds of thousands or even millions of euros, but also appraising the artwork, assessing its condition, provenance, and more. Additionally, it requires to organize its professional transportation as to insure the artwork throughout its lifecycle.

Finally, finding a future buyer can be complex, demanding access to and a deep understanding of gallery and dealer networks.

Our solution

Our expert team carefully selects investment opportunities for you and takes care of due diligence on the artwork (condition, certificate, provenance), as well as its transportation and insurance.

Through investment in our co-investment projects, it becomes possible to invest in multiple artworks made by major 20th-century artists simultaneously. Starting from the selection phase, we collaborate with leading galleries and/or specialists of the acquired artists to entrust the artworks for resale.

experience

01

Matis Identifies Strong Art Market Trends

Matis determines present and future important trends in the art market and identifies iconic artists to follow via the cross-analysis of market research on art history movements and the examination of public and private transactions connected to the buying and selling of artworks.

Indeed, artists such as Warhol, Basquiat, and Kusama have withstood the test of time. Their works' availability decreases as their demand rises, resulting in a scarcity effect.

02

Matis Selects Major Artworks

The artworks selected by Matis are appreciated by museums, leading worldwide galleries, and foreign collectors, with acquisition prices ranging from 500,000 to 5 million dollars.

Our staff can swiftly assess the maximum price at which to purchase the artwork and so perform a diverse deal flow in order to optimize the possible resale at the time of acquisition. Because of our experience, we can acquire at a low enough price to resale through art market specialists (galleries) who are most familiar with prospective customers.

03

Matis Structures Co-Investment Projects for You to Invest

For each artwork, a Simplified Joint Stock Company (SAS) is created in which private investors can invest through the acquisition of convertible bonds.

04

Artworks Are Entrusted to Major Galleries for Resale

Matis delegates the re-sale of the artworks to art galleries specializing in their respective artists, capable of replacing the artwork in front of the right collector at its correct market value.

Matis collaborates with the largest contemporary art galleries in Europe, the United States, the Middle East, and Asia.

05

Upon the sale of the artwork, you recover the invested amounts along with any capital gains, not guaranteed

Artworks are sold within a target horizon of 24 months. Depending on the resale value obtained for the artwork, investors benefit from the performance associated with the artwork, net of fees applied by Matis.
Matis targets to deliver an IRR(1) (not guaranteed) between 15% and 20%.

What is co-investing ?

Co-investing is a form of collective financing where individual investors pool funds for various projects (stock market, real estate, art, etc.).

It provides access to expensive operations that would otherwise be difficult to access due to a lack of network, expertise, or resources.

What application in the context of contemporary art?

In the specific case of art, a legal structure is created to manage the investment of a particular artwork. Investors become bondholders, financing the acquisition of the said artwork.

The returns from this operation depend on the capital gains realized upon its resale.

Legal status and
co-investment

For each opportunity, an investment vehicle is created, allowing you to invest on a part of the work through the acquisition of convertible bonds.

Let our investors speak for us

Accessing artworks usually inaccessible to most investors

The main strength of Matis is to allow small shareholders to access masterpieces of art history, usually inaccessible to most investors - a valuable point for a young investor like myself. Moreover, Matis’ strategy for selecting the artworks is based on a rigorous approach, carried by a team of experts in the art market, with several years of experience. Finally, I appreciate the educational approach of the company, which I could perceive both in my exchanges with the sales team and in reading the supports and informational documents presented for each opportunity..

Perceive art under a new facet, that of investment

As a collector on a personal level, I was captivated by Matis' value proposition, which allows one to perceive art under a new facet, that of investment. Matis’ selection strategy focused exclusively on world-renowned artists whose value has been established for years, convinced me to take the step and invest in a work by François-Xavier Lalanne.

Matis allows investing in a piece of art history.

Thanks to Matis, I was able to easily invest in a high-performing asset class, which is difficult to access directly without in-depth knowledge of the art market and a significant financial envelope. I was convinced by the expertise of Arnaud Dubois and the investment team in their ability to source quality works, coveted by museum institutions and art professionals. The emotional and cultural dimension is also very strong and allows investing in a piece of art history.

Investing in recognized artists with a high market value

Matis was recommended to me by an investor friend. I was subsequently convinced by the company's investment strategy, which only proposes investing in recognized artists with a high market value. Through this co-investment solution, I can diversify my portfolio into an asset class that is weakly correlated with other financial products. In addition, the investment scheme is easy to understand, and the subscription procedures are quick.

Simple and fast investment experience.

Matis is an interesting co-investment solution for building a diversified portfolio by investing in several high-quality artworks, which I would not have been able to purchase alone. Moreover, the investment experience is simple and fast.

We would be delighted to answer your questions if we haven't already done so here

How do convertible bonds into shares (CBS) issued by Matis in its co-investment projects work?

The simplified joint stock company holding the artwork issues convertible bonds into shares.

Matis uses a non-conversion premium mechanism to transfer the capital gain issued from the sale of the work by the holding to our investors, limiting the tax impact of this gain.

A stock setup would have been possible but would have led to a double taxation system that we wanted to avoid. This setup has been validated by a law firm, which advises us on this subject.

What are the fees related to investing in Matis' co-investment projects ?

Matis is remunerated only from its investor clients and at the time of investment.

Entrance fees divided as follows will be applied to each investment:

- commission fees of 5% of the amount invested for providing the order reception and transmission service
- commission fees of 5% of the amount invested for the provision of the investment service

Matis is also remunerated in case of profit realized on a co-investment project, amounting to 20% of the performance amount.

All Internal Rates of Return* and target returns indicated in our documentation are net of all these fees.

*The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) measures the profitability of an investment over a given period. It takes into account the evolution of the value of shares and distributed capital gains over the period, as well as subscription and management fees supported by the investor.

Is there a minimum investment to invest in a Matis co-investment project?

Co-investment projects offered by Matis are accessible from an investment of € 20,000, and these conditions are identical for all our investors.
